New Year Greetings from World Toilet Expo & Forum!
Together with the World Toilet Organization (WTO), we look forward to working with you closely for a healthy and prosperous year. Set up in Singapore in 2001, WTO has been actively furthering the cause of having clean urban public toilets and adequate rural sanitation for everyone. Last year was an eventful one and more projects are being planned for 2006.
Highlights of 2005
• World Toilet Expo & Forum Series

The series was launched last year to address the needs of matured cities. It took off successfully in Shanghai in May 2005. The three-day event received over 250 participants from 20 countries, underscoring the growing interest in improving toilet infrastructures and other toilet issues in China and around the world. The 2nd World Toilet Expo & Forum will be held in Bangkok from 16 to 18 November 2006.

• World Toilet Summit

Setting Standards and Satisfying Needs Globally – World Toilet Summit 2005, Belfast, Ireland, 26 – 29 Sept 2005. The summit drew a crowd of 418 international delegates from 28 countries.

• World Toilet College

The World Toilet College was set up in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic. It is a dedicated institution offering training programmes such as Restroom Specialist Training Course, Ecological Sanitation Course and Restroom Design Courses. Locally and worldwide, the WTC has the support of government ministries, agencies, private companies, sanitation experts and industry stalwarts.

• Rebuilding Homes, Restoring Lives

This Sri Lanka Tsunami Toilet Rehabilitation Project was organised in co-operation with Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka and sponsored by Lien Foundation. It has achieved its objective in constructing 50 ecologically and economically sustainable toilets throughout Sri Lanka.

• Sanitation is Dignity – World Toilet Day Campaign 2005, Singapore

The World Toilet Day Campaign which was held in Singapore from 18 – 22 November helped to raise awareness of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal for Sanitation by illustrating the plight of 2.6 billion people without adequate sanitation. On the designated Day – 19 November, there was a short commemoration ceremony with over 60 guests from various public, private and humanitarian organizations.

Looking Ahead...

As the WTO expands in numbers and its service quality, new initiatives are organised alongside some of its core activities.

>> Toilet Rehabilitation Project in Aceh
WTO is currently preparing the application documents for Singapore Red Cross “Tidal Wave Asia Funds’ for this new project.

>> WTO Website
The WTO Website will be revamped to include more information, user-friendliness and interactivity. In addition, members can look forward to a monthly e-newsletter.

>> Training Courses from WTC
The World Toilet College (WTC) aims to implement the Restroom Specialist Training Course and Ecological Sanitation Course in the first quarter of 2006. Click here for more information.
